INTRODUCTION

The National Gallery got its start by an act of Parliament in 1824 and a donation of three dozen paintings by the banker and merchant John Julius Angerstein. The collection has grown to over 2,000 works, from the early 13th century through the 19th century. Artists represented include Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, Rembrandt, Frans Hals (my favorite!), van Gogh, Manet, Renoir, and hundreds of other suspects known to art connoisseurs everywhere.

The modern art is at the Tate Gallery.

Sort of hanging on around the east and north perimeter of the National Gallery building is the National Portrait Gallery. This one is filled with the mugs of kings and queens and hundreds of other famous people from various walks of life.
