Bull Flight

Extracurricular activities at the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain.
The baby bull sees red and starts up. Stephanie turns in flight, literally off the ground.

Stephanie flies from a baby bull at a ranch near Salamanca, Spain.

Stephanie attended the Universidad de Salamanca for six weeks to study Spanish language and culture. Part of the Iberian culture is bull fighting, as everybody knows. So she and some of her classmates made a field trip to see how the bulls are raised. One of the young bulls took an immediate fondness for Stephanie. The feeling was not mutual. Notice the expressions on the faces of the spectators, two of whom are well protected.

Stephanie and Universidad de Salamanca classmates in Spain taunt a baby bull.

Stephanie's Report

Today we went to the country and messed around with a baby bull. We were in the bull ring. We were all around it trying to get its attention. Finally towards the end it chased me. The place is called Picadero Valverde, near Alba de Tormes. It's a place in the country where they raise bulls. We went into a field filled with bulls, but of course we were on a truck, not walking through them. It was sooo much fun. The place is run by a husband and wife whose son is actually a bullfighter They played a video and educated us on bullfighting. It's not as vile as I thought it was. The restaurant there was filled with pictures of bullfighters and their son's first bullfighter outfit. There are about ten massive bull heads mounted on the wall. I think that was my best experience so far. Some people are going to Pomplona tonight to run tomorrow morning but there wasn't room in the car. I know there's no way I'm running so I didn't need to go anyway.

In the past few years she has done some impressive train travel around Europe. Many of her photos are peppered throughout this web site.
