Search engines are beautiful sites for locating information on any imaginable subject. Most of them have a small query window in which you type a search word or phrase. Then hit your enter key and the results come in from around the planet. If you enter europe you will have millions of hits. Narrow your search by including the word travel and you will still have a couple million hits. Narrow it further to include budget or independent and you start to get down to a selection which provides the meaningful information you seek.

There are many other search engines available on the internet besides those listed here. Some of them charge a fee for ranking on certain search words. For example, a site selling potted plants may purchase a high standing for the search word europe. I have tried to keep this nonsense and corruption out of my list. If you know of a search engine which is doing this please let me know.

Other search engines, including some listed here, charge a fee for higher ranking in the results on certain search words. This is identified by listing some as sponsors or indicating the price per click (PPC) next to the listing. You have your choice of visiting sites who pay the search engine for prime listing or scrolling down to find those who do not pay. You do not pay to visit sponsors or PPC listings but the web sites you visit do pay according to terms they have with the search engine.

Then again, a few search engines have clearly identified advertisements in a small uniformly designed box, usually on the right margin. The search results are given according to the method of the search engine and the advertisements are ranked separately, usually by the amount they bid for the position.
